Apartment Living Tips for a Happy and Active Dog

written by Tori Holmes

Living in an apartment with a dog comes with unique challenges, especially when it comes to keeping your pup active and entertained. Without a backyard, pet parents need to get creative to ensure their furry friend gets enough exercise, mental stimulation, and fun. The good news is that it’s easy to keep your dog happy and healthy in an apartment setting!

Prioritize daily walks and outdoor adventures

Since your dog can’t just run outside unsupervised, structured walks are a must. Aim for at least two to three walks per day, with one longer, more exploratory walk to allow for sniffing and mental stimulation.

●    Try new walking routes: When you’re out for a walk, mix up your routes to keep things interesting. New sights and smells can help prevent boredom and make walks more engaging for your pup.

●    Look for off-leash play opportunities: Whenever possible, visit a nearby dog park for off-leash play. This gives your dog the freedom to run and interact with other dogs in a safe, enclosed space.

●    Plan bigger weekend adventures: Try hiking or urban exploring on weekends for a change of scenery. Different terrains and environments provide extra mental and physical stimulation.

A tired dog is a happy dog, and these small efforts make apartment living just as enriching for them as a house with a yard.

Get creative with indoor play

With apartment living, you need to get creative about keeping your pup entertained in the periods between walks. Since they can’t entertain themselves outside, you need to look for opportunities to help your pup stay mentally – and physically – stimulated with indoor activities.

●    Invest in a snuffle mat: This clever puzzle toy lets you hide tasty morsels in its fabric folds to engage your dog's natural foraging instincts. The searching and sniffing action provides mental stimulation with the added benefit of slowing down fast eaters.

 ●    Keep them busy with a Kong: A Kong is a must-have for apartment dogs because you can stuff it with their favorite Freshpet recipe and then freeze so it becomes a long-lasting, engaging challenge. Its unpredictable bounce also adds an extra layer of fun, encouraging pups to bat, chase, and work for every tasty bite even when you’re not home.

●    Organize regular games of hide and seek: You can keep your dog’s mind active by encouraging them to sniff out hidden treasures, like Freshpet treats favorite toys, around your apartment. By tapping into their natural scavenging instincts, it transforms playtime into a rewarding mental workout that burns energy.

Dogs thrive on novelty and can lose interest in toys that are always available. By rotating three or four toys weekly, you can prevent boredom, extend the lifespan of the toys, and boost your pup’s problem-solving skills.

Organize regular play dates

If your dog enjoys canine company, look for opportunities to set up playdates with other pups. Many cities also have:

●    Sign them up for doggy daycare: These facilities give your pup safe socialization opportunities when you're at work or need to run errands. Many offer climate-controlled play areas perfect for apartment dogs to burn energy year-round.

●    Attend a dog park meetup: Dog park meetups give apartment dogs space to run, socialize safely, and burn energy – something they can’t always do in an apartment. These structured play sessions give your pup a chance to get their daily exercise and socialize with other dogs, which can boost their emotional well-being.

Apartment living doesn’t mean your dog has to miss out on fun or exercise. With a mix of daily walks, indoor play, and socialization, your pup can thrive in a smaller space!
