How to Safely Introduce a Dog and Cat in Your Home

written by Tori Holmes

Bringing a new pet home is exciting, but if you’re mixing species, a little anxiety is normal. The good news is that with a little patience and a solid plan, the expression “fighting like cats and dogs” doesn’t have to be true in your household.

How to Prepare Your Home Before Introducing a Dog and Cat

Regardless of whether you’re introducing a new dog to your existing cat, or a new cat to your existing dog, there is one golden rule to keep in mind – never rush. Your pets’ first meeting sets the tone for their relationship, so it’s important to do it right.

Before any face-to-face meetings occur, you’ll want to get your house ready. Take the time to create separate safe spaces for each pet, complete with their own food, water, cozy bed, and, for cats, a litter box. This space will act as a sanctuary while they settle in, as well as throughout the introduction process.

To help ensure introductions go well, have a good supply of Freshpet treats on hand to help with positive reinforcement. Freshpet treats make for a great high-value reward as their irresistible taste and smell are perfect for rewarding calm, friendly behavior. By including Freshpet treats in your introduction process, you’ll help create positive associations with the other pet’s presence.

While the core principles of introducing pets are the same, the specific approach can depend on who the new resident is – read on to learn more.

How to Introduce a New Dog to a Cat

If you already have a cat in your home, it’s your job to help the new dog learn respectful manners. While dogs should have their own safe space to unwind, they are usually ready to make introductions much earlier than cats.

●    Step 1: Once your dog is familiar with their space, start a ‘scent swap’ introduction. To do this, swap their bedding or use a soft cloth to gently rub each animal, then let the other sniff it. This pre-meet through scent is a huge first step in familiarizing them with each other.

●    Step 2: After a few sessions of scent swapping, it’s time for face-to-face introductions. During the first introduction, have your dog on a leash and your cat free to observe or leave on their own accord. You can also use a baby gate or a crack in the door so they can see each other without full access, if you want to take things even slower.

●    Step 3: During introductions, if your dog looks at the cat and then looks away, or shows any calm behavior like sitting or lying down, immediately praise and reward with a Freshpet treat. By doing this, you’re teaching them that being calm around the cat – or even ignoring it – is the most rewarding behavior.

●    Step 4: Never let your dog chase or corner the cat, even playfully. If your cat hisses, arches its back, or ducks away, calmly redirect your dog and end this introduction session.

●    Step 5: Repeat these short positive introduction sessions every day. If your dog consistently remains calm and your cat seems curious rather than scared, you can allow them more freedom to interact, but always with supervision until you’re 100% confident in their relationship.

By rewarding your dog's calmness and giving your cat the freedom to lead the introductions, you will guide them both toward a confident, stress-free relationship.

How to Introduce a New Cat to a Dog

When introducing a new cat to your dog, you need to help your cat build confidence around their canine sibling.

●    Step 1: The key difference in introducing a new cat to your dog is that your cat needs a few days to decompress in the safe zone you have set up for them. Give your cat at least three days – but ideally a week – to settle in and feel comfortable. You’ll know they’re ready to start introductions when they’re actively exploring their room and greeting you when you enter.

●    Step 2: Once you’re confident that your cat has settled in, you can start the process of scent swapping. Just like with dogs, this exercise allows your cat to “meet” your dog without the pressure of a face-to-face interaction.

●    Step 3: In addition to scent swapping, allow your cat to explore the house on their own when your dog is on a walk or locked in another room. This will give them the chance to learn the layout and find different vantage points – both of which will increase their confidence.

●    Step 4: After a few days of scent swapping and your cat getting the lay of the land, you can start with face-to-face introductions. It’s important that you manage your dog’s energy, as a highly excitable or vocal dog can be terrifying for your cat. With your dog on a leash, get them to sit or lie down while you slightly open the door to your cat’s room. This gives your cat the opportunity to see the dog and come out if they choose. Be sure to reward calm behavior with plenty of Freshpet treats.

●    Step 5: Continue these face-to-face introductions until your cat is comfortable leaving their room and exploring with your dog present – but ensure they have a clear, dog-free path back to their safe room if they need it.

Introducing your cat to your dog can take a bit longer, but it's important to go at your cat's pace. In order for their relationship to grow, your cat needs to feel completely secure in their environment. Once they do, the bonding can really start.

How to Help Your Dog and Cat Live Together Peacefully

Remember, the goal of these initial introductions isn't instant friendship. The friendship between your pets may blossom over time, but even if it doesn’t, positive early introductions with the help of Freshpet treats ensure they’ll always have a baseline of trust and respect. And be sure to celebrate the small wins, such as a peaceful nap in the same room, a curious glance without a bark or a hiss!
